5 Tips When Clubbing In New York

At dusk, I took a taxi to Hudson Street and 14th Street and walked to Gansevoort Market, one of New York City’s trendiest neighborhoods for club goers. One hundred years ago, this area housed over 200 slaughterhouses and packing plants. Now, fashion models strutted past me down cobblestoned streets, while mannequins from Alexander McQueenMoschinoDiane Von Furstenberg glared down at me. I took a 1-mile stroll down the High Line until I reached the Standard Hotel, where I met a friend for my birthday at the Boom Boom Room.

If you’re celebrating a girl’s night in New York, here are few tips.

1. Keep your group very, very small.

Three people max. Otherwise, it will be impossible to gain entry to a club, find a table at a restaurant, or even stay together when strutting down the crowded streets.

2. Wear your best American Hipster Chic (emphasis on the chic).

Pull out your vintage Zadig & Voltaire jacket, your Alexander Wang wrap piece, or your skanky American Apparel dress. Rent a Chanel Bag, it’s a common accessory in New York. You’ll need it. The competition in the Meatpacking District is fierce. Keep it trendy and not trashy.

3. Bring a pair of flats or wear short heals.

Strutting down New York the streets requires excellent foot dexterity and spacial awareness. Those old cobblestoned streets are littered with potholes. It’s not safe to wear stilettos before you arrive at your destination. To catch the attention of a bouncer, you must be extra tall. Save your ankles by keeping your flashy Manolo Blahniks in your purse until you arrive less than a block from the club. TIP: To be a real Manhattanite, wear a New York designer flat.

4. Eat properly and pre-game

You can save a lot of money if you pre-game with friends at your apartment before leaving. Also, if you plan on drinking, enjoy a full meal with lots of starch. Be sure to hydrate. Make dinner reservations close by where you are going to party to save on cab fare.

5. If you’re trying to get into a club, use a French name.

I used to club all the time in college and there were times when, despite my hot friends, tall shoes, and cute outfit, I was not able to push through the crowds and get into the coveted club. Sometimes, the club was strictly guest list only.

In these instances, it’s a clever idea to drop a French name. Jeremie Gardot, for instance (he doesn’t exist). Say the name with your best French accent. I’ve used this tactic several times, and it works! The bouncer knows that there is many French club owners, French table holders, and French promoters. Don’t overdo this one though!
